A Few Wors About Mango
Mangifera indica, commonly known as mango, is a species of flowering plant, native to the Indian subcontinent where it is indigenous and where it was domesticated around 2000 BC. Mango was brought to East Asia around 500 BC, and later, in the 15th century, to the Philippines, and in the 16th century to Africa and Brazil by Portuguese explorers. The English word mango originated from the Portuguese word, manga. The first written occurrence of this word happened in a text by Ludovico di Varthema in Italian in 1510, as Manga. How, when and why, this word changed its “a” ending into “o” is unclear.
Mango is a large fruit-tree, capable of growing to a height and crown width of about 30m (100 feet)! Mango trees are also long-lived! The oldest living mango tree is 300 years old and is found in East Khandesh, in India. Surprisingly, this tree still produces viable fruit! The mango is the national fruit of India, Pakistan, and the Philippines, and it is also the national tree of Bangladesh. There are over 500 mango fruit varieties grown all over the world and most of them ripen in summer.
One cup (220 grams) of mangoes contains just 100 calories, at the same time providing 100% of your daily vitamin C, 35% of your daily vitamin A and 12% of your daily fiber requirement! Wow! Now, girls, pay attention – mango is also a good source of Vitamin E that is known as a “sex vitamin”! Need I say more? And finally, mango is a symbol of love in India, and giving a basket of mangos is considered to be a gesture of great friendship. Now, I can’t give you a basket of mangos, but I sure can and will prove my friendship to you by teaching you how to make delicious chocolate and mango mousse mini cakes! So, let’s get busy!
